Known as hard coat anodizing or Type III anodizing, hard anodization is a specialized treatment process that creates a coating on the surface of aluminum to augment the metal’s material properties. This process forms a comparatively thick coating of aluminum oxide on the metal’s surface, up to about 25 microns ( 0.001 inch) in thickness. The coating achieved through hard anodizing develops due to an electrochemical reaction that causes en oxide layer to form on aluminum surfaces.
